I got that receiver on a very good sale last week and I am using it to connect my TV, Xbox and record player, so I don't think I'm returning it (unless an amplifier would allow me to have all these connections at the same time). U/taudep I just acquired the Cinema 70s receiver (successor of the Marantz NR1711) and I noticed my LS50 Meta speakers don't sound as good as I imagine they are supposed to sound. I wanted a more integrated feature set for now. I also had a Musical Fidelity 5si on my short list that I actually liked better, but was missing: 1) headphone output 2) a/b speaker selector 3) a DAC and 4) dirac/blueos - but this wasn't a deal breaker for me since it could have been added externally. Here's a link to where I talk about more where I came from with the AVR + AMP setup: Maybe the C389/C399 is worth the upgrade, though, because of the different amp technology in use?Īnyway, I'm really happy I was able to afford the C399 and have an end game system for the foreseeable future.ĮDIT: BTW, I bought way more power in this amp than I currently need, but figured if I move to full floor standers, or move to a larger place, I'll be all set. That said, I'd probably not get the full-blown C399 and wait either for the C389 to come out, or look more into the currently marked down C388. I was running with a AVR -> AMP before, and I can't believe how much a real amp driving the metas changed the sound. This is what led me to go check out the "life-style product" KEF LS50W 2 years ago, and keep them, because they had no hiss.I recently upgraded to a NAD C399, with Dirac/BluOS. I just got very tired of ordering and returning so many different monitors. But all of them have had very noticeable hiss, some a lot worse than others. I have already tried more than half a dozen nearfield studio monitors of different brands. Using online calculators for speaker sensitivity to SPL, if I am not doing this wrong, 85 dB SPL (1W/1m) with a 70W amplifier and 0.8m should produce an ear-shattering 108 dB.ħ0W surely should be enough for me to listen to music at 50 dB - 70 dB without distortion then - even with equalization for fuller bass, no? ![]() And because I will be equalizing for fuller bass, I will be feeding the amplifier a perceived quieter signal to provide headroom for more bass, therefor needing to increase the amplifier gain somewhat compared to no equalizing. In Amir's review of the LS50 Meta, I understood that the speakers are mostly 4 Ohm, but they have low sensitivity. Question is, if the alleged 70W at 4 Ohms it will be sufficient for my use case without distorting. It ranks excellent on the Amplifier SINAD list (#39 at the time of writing), it has TOSLINK input, and it also has auto stand-by and auto wake on all inputs except phono. I have been looking at Topping MX5 as a possible amplifier candidate. I will therefor use equalization to bring up the bass on the LS50 Metas (along with room corrections with help from UMIK-1 and REW).įor connectivity to my computer, I strongly prefer TOSLINK over USB because ease of use and because the TOSLINK audio device is permanent even when unplugged. ![]() I don't need sub-bass, but I enjoy a full sound with bass around 60 Hz. But I never, ever listen to music any louder than that. My listening volume is around that of a conversation, maybe slightly louder now and then. LS50 Meta's will be equalized to have fuller bass, ref.Connectivity: TOSLINK strongly preferred, but USB is ok too if driverless.Listening distance (ear to speaker): 80 cm / 2.6 feet. ![]() Listening position: At my computer desk.I've read Amir's review of the LS50 Meta and I'm pretty sure I would like the LS50 Meta sound just as much as I like the LS50W after tweaking it. I'm thinking it would be easier to have service done or replace the electronics if they are not built into the speakers. Therefor, I want to replace the LS50W with something more adapted and reliable for my use. Also, all that amplification power in the LS50W is completely overkill for my kind of nearfield use at low to moderate listening volume at my computer desk. However, I spend a lot of time at my desk, and I don't think the LS50W was designed for this kind of use with prolonged sessions of being turned on, as they are now having reliability issues and are undergoing service these days. For the past 2 years, I've been using KEF LS50 Wireless (v1) as nearfield speakers at my computer desk, and with some UMIK-1, REWing and equalization, they sound really wonderful.
